But with results over the weekend not going for them just five points now separate them from sixth-placed Jersey.

Big-spending Jersey sprung the shock result of the weekend, inflicting a second successive defeat on second-placed Yorkshire Carnegie at St Peter.

Knights boss Clive Griffiths effectively ruled out any prospect of pipping Carnegie for second spot several weeks ago.

But with the Leeds club now only 12 points clear of Knights from the same number of games, tackling unbeaten London Irish this weekend ahead of a trip to Castle Park next month, Griffiths admits: “There is a slim chance of catching them. But my main concern is finishing in the top four. Anything can happen in the play-offs and on our day we are capable of beating anyone in this league.”

Griffiths admits that the stop-start nature of the club’s season over the last two to three months isn’t an ideal situation.

“You want to be playing week-in, week-out. We have suffered more than anyone else from the demise of London Welsh and have lost three games.

“With not having a game we worked on our defensive structure in training last week even though we only conceded one try in the win at Nottingham and our defensive completion rate has been above 90 per cent. We’ll be working on our offensive game this week.”
