The Town Field club thought they had taken the Nottingham club to penalty strokes but Tim Shelley’s last gasp goal was harshly ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.

The first quarter of the game saw relatively few chances although Doncaster defender Pete Bartlett pulled off a remarkable stick save from Great Britain international Mark Gleghorne.

However, Gleghorne was not to be denied and, in the 24th minute, he dispossessed Josh Pettinger in midfield before racing clear of the cover defence and skilfully lobbing the advancing Ash Watson in the home goal.

Doncaster’s response was immediate and, a minute later, good work from Daniel West in the circle allowed him to slip the ball to Dan Legg who coolly volleyed home.

Beeston came out strongly in the second half and two goals in the opening ten minutes from Steventon and Gleghorne appeared to have put the result beyond Doncaster.

However, they continued to battle hard and with five minutes remaining, after good work from Legg and West, James Gunthorpe fired home the loose ball to half the deficit.

In the final seconds Doncaster poured forward and were awarded a penalty corner. Shelley bundled the ball over the line but the home celebrations were short-lived as the umpire ruled the goal out for a foul on the goalkeeper.

n Doncaster’s ladies got their season back on track with a 3-1 victory over Kirkby Stephen.

Goals from Charlotte Dodds and Bexx Woods gave Doncaster a foothold in the game but Kirkby halved the deficit before half time.

The second half saw plenty of chances for Doncaster but it was not until late in the game when Alice Williams found space in the circle to score and put the game beyond the opposition.

Jay Noddle and Williams both received Player of the Match.
