As we bid farewell to 2015 this evening, the borough is already on course to have a jam-packed and successful year - during which more tourists are likely to visit the town than ever before.

Doncaster war hero Ben Parkinson MBE is set to kick off events next month, when the inspirational 31-year-old will help to mark a decade of the Let’s Get Doncaster Walking Festival by leading the first walk of this year’s event around Lakeside on January 16.

In February the FARRRS link road, which will link the M18 motorway to the A638 Parrott’s corner, is set to be completed. It is hoped the new link road will help to pave the way for faster journey times to Robin Hood airport in time for a raft of new flight routes that are set to be added in March.

Thousands of people are set to line the streets of Doncaster when the town hosts the second stage of the prestigious, international sporting spectacle that is the Tour de Yorkshire in April.

The town’s stage of the race will see riders cycle past some of the jewels in Doncaster’s crown, with Conisbrough Castle among the landmarks included on the whistlestop tour of the borough.

The 250th anniversary of the Doncaster Cup will also be marked during next year’s St Leger Festival - the town’s premier tourism attraction that always draws thousands to the town.

Commenting on what next year has in store for Doncaster, Mayor Ros Jones told the Free Press: “2016 promises to be a significant year for Doncaster, with large-scale regeneration

schemes continuing to develop our borough, and hundreds of thousands of visitors expected to flock here once again for some world class events.

“The wide range of destinations you can visit from our airport will of course be added to by the eight new routes announced by Flybe, which will be available from March 2016.

“With the first two units going up at the £400million iPort development, which will deliver thousands of new jobs, FARRRS is making a huge contribution to Doncaster’s economy.

“Preparations for Phase Two of FARRRS, which links Bawtry Road to Hurst Lane and completes the link road, is well underway and construction work should start next year. 2016 will

be a year to show off Doncaster at its very best, and I wish you all a happy and healthy new year.”

In addition, work is also due to start on a number of projects including the National College for High Speed Rail.

It is hoped the college will be one of the most important developments in Doncaster’s future that will put the borough on track to train those at the forefront of the rail industry.
