He said: “Jack was a family friend for more than 45 years.

"I first met him in the 1970s at Elland Road (Leeds United’s stadium).

“I was known as Ricky Stardust the DJ and entertainer in those days.

"I had written to the chairman Manny Cussins to ask if I could do the music before and after the matches and I was invited to meet him.

"He had someone show me around the club and Jack Charlton was the first player I was introduced and we talked for ages.

“He always called me Mr Stardust. I kept in touch with Jack and his wife Pat on and off over the yeas and I would attend any shows of his if it was convenient, or local for me.

Mr Butler has worked with a number of big names during a length career in film, television and music.

A father of four, his career was cut short a few years ago when a car crash left him with multiple injuries, and the need for a pacemaker.
