Doncaster Cycle Festival rolls into town today

The popular Doncaster Cycle Festival returns today bringing fast-paced cycle racing to the heart of Doncaster.

The event within Sir Nigel Gresley Square will consist of eight exciting races ranging from children under eight races through to the men’s elite race,

Due to the growing success of the Festival the current organisers, Doncaster Wheelers, have teamed up with a professional events company, TLS Events Ltd, who will bring a wealth of experience and professionalism to grow the event even further.

Mayor Ros Jones said: “The Tour de Yorkshire showcased Doncaster’s growing reputation as a hub for cycling, and the return of the fantastic Doncaster Cycle Festival will emphasise this even more.

“We have a growing number of children getting in to cycling in Doncaster, and the crowds that came out to see elite riders in action in the Tour de Yorkshire show just how much local people have taken to the sport.

“I look forward to a great day on Sunday and hope to see many of you there.”

Martin Maltby, President of Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club, said: “This year’s Cycle Festival is shaping up brilliantly well – there are over 270 riders registered, with even more expected to enter on the day.

“There’s also been an encouraging growth in the number of riders in the youth categories, which is mirrored by the increased youth membership of Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club as well as the growing number of young riders attending our Go Ride coaching sessions.

“This year is the club’s 90th anniversary, and we are very proud to be involved in this event as we continue to see cycling growing in popularity in Doncaster.”

The event kicks off at 9.30am.
