Victoria Lodge Residential Home in Edenthorpe, which cares for up to 24 elderly people with dementia, was given a safety rating of ‘Inadequate’ - the lowest possible score - by the Care Quality Commission.

Debbie Westhead, the CQC’s deputy chief inspector for adult social care in the north, said: “Whenever we find a service to be inadequate, we will consider taking further action.”

Inspectors visited in February to investigate ‘concerns in relation to the service’. The CQC reported that the home was ‘not safe’ and added staff are ‘not always responsive’ to residents’ needs.

The report highlighted how there had been nine accidents, including one resident who walked into a door and needed hospital treatment, recorded since January. Staff were said to be ‘unable to explain what people’s dependency levels were’.

The inspection followed a previous unannounced visit in January in which ‘breaches of regulations were identified’ and the home was handed an overall ‘inadequate’ rating. A follow up visit is expected. Nobody from the care home was available for a comment.
