The Keepmoat Stadium club finished fifth out of six in the first of the four league meetings at Derby last month,

“We weren’t too far behind the third and fourth-placed clubs but we are looking to finish a bit higher this time,” said club chairman Kev Lincoln.

“We had to contend with a couple of last-minute injuries and we had a slight problem with not getting a full team out, but we’ve corrected that and hopefully we’ll make a better show of it at Bedford.

“It’s just getting to know the routine and also the calibre of the clubs that we are up against and, as I said before the first league meeting, we are just taking it one step at a time and seeing how it goes.

“Some of the athletes didn’t perform as well as they are capable of on the day, whether that was down to nerves or not - because it can be a little bit daunting competing at this level for the first time - I don’t know but we know there is room for improvement.”

Newly-crowned British men’s decathlon champion Aiden Davies will again line-up for his hometown club.

“We are very proud of Aiden,” said Lincoln.

“He’s been with us since a young boy and he stuck with as he came up through the ranks. He trains hard and (coach) Bruce Bewley has done a good job with him.

“He’s a credit to the club, and a nice lad as well. He’s certainly a real role model for the younger athletes.

“He’s already achieved a lot but he has plenty of time to improve still further and could possibly go on to Olympic standard in future years.”
