Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS trust needs improvement

A Doncaster hospital trust is failing to meet the required standards and must make improvements, a Government watchdog has ruled.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust was given an overall rating of ‘requires improvement’ by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission - CQC.

The CQC looked in detail at whether the Trust’s services were safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

Safety, effectiveness and responsiveness were all judged as requiring improvement.

Caring and leadership were rated as good.

The planned and unannounced inspections took place over four days in April 2015 and covered Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital and outpatient services at Retford Hospital.

The report comes just days after it was revealed bosses at the trust had launched an investigation over a £12 million black hole in their finances.

The trust is reporting a year-to-date deficit of £12 million - contrary to previous financial reports forecasting that the Trust would end the financial year in surplus.

Criticism in the CQC report included the number of staffing vacancies that were said to be “impacting on the quality of service provided in some instances.”

Concerns were also raised regarding infection prevention practices in Doncaster Royal infirmary.

The report said: “The majority of staff followed correct infection prevention processes, and hand washing techniques. We did identify some concerns regarding infection prevention practices in the critical care unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary with regard to nursing patients with infections.”

Praise was given however, to staff who “provided caring and compassionate care.”

Chief Executive Mike Pinkerton said since the CQC’s visit in April 2015 many of the areas highlighted for improvement had been completed and work was underway to tackle the rest of the concerns.

He added: “We welcomed the CQC’s scrutiny of our services and we are pleased that they have recognised the many good and outstanding areas of work which takes place in the Trust.

“However the report does identify a small number of areas where improvements can be made in delivering safe, responsive and effective care.

“I am confident we have either already completed, or are well underway in completing the required actions.”
