Doncaster academy considering closing its sixth form due to 'financial constraints'

Armthorpe Academy, located in Mere Lane, Armthorpe, are currently considering closing their sixth form next year, due to concerns the school will be unable to financially sustain its post-16 provision.

Andy Cope, Headteacher at Armthorpe Academy commented: "The proposal to close the Sixth Form at Armthorpe Academy is something which governors have introduced very reluctantly because of the financial pressures under which we are operating.

"This is a national issue, not one which is specific to Armthorpe Academy.

"In short, we do not feel able to sustain Post 16 provision without diverting resources from students in Years 7 – 11.”

This comes a week after new figures from the Department of Education revealed how the school failed to achieve the national benchmark of 40 per cent of pupils achieving five A-C GCSEs, including maths and English in last August's exams.
