Donate clothes to keep Barnsley Hospice open

HOSPICE staff in Barnsley are appealing for more unwanted goods for their charity shops at Mexborough, Wombwell and Goldthorpe, after a decline in donations.

Between April and December 2011, Barnsley Hospice received 30,955 bags of donated goods, compared with 34,280 bags over the same period in 2010.

Almost £900,000 of the £1.9 million a year the hospice needs to stay open, is generated by selling donated goods in its shops.

Retail services manager Dawn Charlesworth said: “We know a lot of supporters are tightening their belts due to the tough economic times and they’re perhaps hanging on to clothes and household goods longer than in the past.

“But we really need to replenish our stocks. There’s clearly a demand, again because of the current economic climate. We’re really keen to make sure we have plenty of quality stock for people to browse through.”

Items can be donated at any of the shops between 9am and 4pm. Collections can be arranged for large donations by calling 01226 244244 or for furniture donations call 01226 771715.
