Don Your Way column: Dominic Cummings: It's not about right or left wing, its about right and wrong

You have probably had your fill of the whole sorry mess that is the Dominic Cummings saga over the last week.

But it is a story that’s not going to go away any time soon, whether you, me or anyone else likes it and despite what Boris Johnson may try to do to make it disappear.

I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve seen labelling it as a ‘left wing media’ witch hunt.

The simple fact of the matter is its not about right v left, its about right v wrong. And Cummings was very wrong.

That’s why 60 Conservative MPs have called for him to stand down. That's why Conservative supporting newspapers like the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph have been frothing with rage. Why a Conservative minister has resigned. Why right wing commentators on Twitter are seething.

And yet we’re still told its crazed lefties baying for blood or its all about Brexit, when it most certainly is not.

It boils down to the fact that the man who helped set the rules, broke them in the most outrageous manner – and can’t bring himself to apologise for doing so.

“What about Stephen Kinnock, why don’t the ‘MSM’ write about him?,” bleat the Cummings backers. They did. That’s how every soul ranting on Facebook knows about him.

I’ve seen rage over people gathering in Doncaster’s parks and furious anger at people not obeying social distancing at the supermarket but for some reason, we’re all expected to let Cummings off the hook because he was following his ‘instincts’ and being a good dad.

Try telling that to the people who have not been able to attend funerals, spend time with dying relatives, who have missed out on seeing cherished relatives for months.

And yes, the photograpgers outside his house ignoring social distancing were wrong as well and I condemn that.

But this is not about right v left. Its about right v wrong. Cummings was wrong and if he had an ounce of decency he’d at least say sorry, rather than the cock and bull eye sight trip to Barnard Castle.
