DIAMOND WEDDING: Sheffield couple mark 60 years of marriage

It was the year Donny Osmond was born, Harold Macmillan succeeded Anthony Eden as Prime Minister and BBC TV first broadcast astronomy series The Sky At Night with Patrick Moore.

The year was 1957 and it was the year that Sheffield’s Harry and Sheila Beatson were married.

The couple, aged 81 and 80 respectively, last week celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a family meal at Cubley Hall.

The pair, who live in Colley Avenue, Parson Cross, met aged just 16 and 17-years-old, just as Harry was about to start his National Service in the army.

They married on March 9 at St Mary’s Church in Ecclesfield and went on to have four children - two sons and two daughters, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

They will be familiar to many people around Sheffield having worked together as children’s entertainers Beato and Uncle Fred from 1984 until they retired in 2012.

They provided entertainment at the launch of the city’s first ever Supertram, at the opening of the Peace Gardens and the opening of the Winter Gardens in 2003, an event attended by the Queen.

Over the years they have raised lots of money for Weston Park Hospital.

Sheila explained the secret to a long and happy marriage: “You all have your ups and downs, and I could murder him at times, but it’s just about loving someone and just being together.”

The family are continuining their celebrations in June when Sheila’s brother reaches 50 and over 100 of them will have a get-together at City Limits.
