Maleka, aged 20, was presented with the Maltby Lions’ Club Award for the student of the year.

Lions representative Pat Harker was at the Dinnington Campus Heart Space to present the certificate to Maleka in front of her tutors, friends and family. Maleka also received a £200 prize to help with her studies.

Mrs Harker said “We’re proud to support Rotherham College and each year we award a grant to students.”

Tutors nominate students without their knowledge and the student considered the most deserving of the honour is selected.

Jacqueline Moore nominated Maleka because of her outstanding dedication to her studies and for looking after college animals.

Ms Moore said: “Maleka gets involved in every event and activity including animals at the college. She even came in on her birthday to help out!

“Maleka is a dedicated student, we are so proud of her and pleased she has won this award.”

The happy student will use the prize money to buy supplies for her upcoming higher education course at Rotherham College.

Maleka added “Animals are my thing, and my favourite part of my course was working with aquatics.

“I hope to continue my studies and become an animal technician.”
