An Olympic sprinter visited Highgate Primary Academy to see pupils recognised for their efforts in fields of: learning a new skill; helping the community; and presenting a research project.

Forty year six pupils took part in activities that led to these first ‘Highgate Difference Awards’.

They had mastered skills such as learning an instrument, developing art techniques, learning first aid, running, and even balloon modelling.

An eco-group worked to improve the school grounds, and pupils became teachers to give science lessons and football coaching to younger children. Other pupils volunteered in the local library.

Eleven pupils received the ‘Highgate Difference Distinction Award’ for additional effort.

Certificates and medals were presented by Libby Nicholas, CEO of Reach4 Academies, and VIP guest, Emily Freeman, an Olympic Sprinter.

Principal Jo Leishman said: “We could not be more proud of our children for what they have achieved over these past few months. They have worked exceptionally hard and each and every one of them has demonstrated independence, resilience, imagination, ‘work hard’ ethic, empathy for others and belief in themselves. These children have set the tone for many years to come!”
