The Mexborough-born star, 79, says Her Majesty uttered "f***" to him during a laughter filled exchange where she apparently explained the true meaning of the F-word to the booming voiced thespian.

Blessed recounted the anecdote to fans at the Hay Literary Festival in Powys, Wales at the weekend.

The veteran actor recalled how The Queen revealed she was a fan of Flash Gordon and his role as Prince Vultan in the 1980 film version of the story, famed for his bellowing "Gordon's alive!" line.

He said she had also told him she had heard him blurting out the Anglo-Saxon word while hosting the BBC television show Have I Got News For You.

“I had said the word on Have I Got News For You when I was describing people s******* on Everest,” Blessed, an experienced mountaineer, told his audience on Sunday night.

“Well I was at the Palace last year and the Queen was in hysterics about it.”

"It means spreading the seed.”

The actor is proud of his strong South Yorkshire roots and has made numerous return visits to the region over the years.
