DCLT giving confidence to those feeling low

A carer who was overweight and suffered a multitude of physical problems no longer feels written off by society thanks to Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust.

Glyn Butcher from Rotherham used to order a Chinese take away from his local restaurant and get it delivered, despite it being on the same street, as he just couldn’t walk that far to collect it.

Weighing 21 stone and suffering from asthma, sleep apnoea, diabetes, food intolerances and a personality disorder, has meant that life has been difficult for Glyn.

Glyn, who is also a carer for his partner, said: “Since I found the walking group that Chris Green from DCLT runs, I’ve seen a massive change in my life and my outlook.

“From not being able to walk to my local Chinese take away, just down the road, I’ve built up my fitness and have walked from Herringthorpe in Rotherham to Doncaster on occasion for the meetings with Chris. I don’t just walk we also talk about things like nutrition and also fitness and I’ve managed to lose two and a half stone. Chris has really given me hope for my future.”

He added: “I was always seen as a problem, but Chris has helped me build up my confidence and I now volunteer at the Peoples Focus Group (PFG) Doncaster, a group for people who live with mental health issues. Working with Chris and PFG Doncaster, which is free to join, has given me hope and made me realise that I do have a future.”

Chris Green said: “It has been great to see the journey Glyn has been on and the improvements not just on his weight and health but on his outlook to life. We have set mini goals and talked about attempting a coast to coast walk at some point this year.”
