ON THIS DAY: 1982: Sheffield's ABC release classic Lexicon Of Love album

For it was on June 21, 1982 that Martin Fry and co unleashed their debut album The Lexicon Of Love on the British public - and the songs that first boomed out of clubs in that summer more than three decades ago are still as popular now as when they first made their way into the charts.

The album entered the UK Album Chart at number one and spawned four UK Top 20 hit singles - Tears Are Not Enough, Poison Arrow, The Look of Love and All of My Heart.

With the classic production of Buggles star Trevor Horn and orchestration by Anne Dudley, songs focusing on heartache became a recurring theme on the album - and a longform video, Mantrap, featuring songs from the album, made its way into shops in 1983.

As well as launching ABC into the pop stratosphere, it was where Anne Dudley and JJ Jeczalik first worked together, going on to form The Art Of Noise, the mid 80s art-pop favourites who scored hits with Close To The Edit and Peter Gunn.

It also provided the band's breakthrough in the USA where Poison Arrow (no. 25) and The Look Of Love (no. 14) hit the American charts.

With its iconic film noir cover, the album was number one in the UK album charts from July 3-17 1982 and went platinum. It was voted number 15 on the NME's top 50 albums of the 80s and number 3 in the best albums of 1982.

It has also ranked in lists of the 100 greatest debut albums, the 100 greatest British albums of all time and features in the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

In 2009, ABC performed the album at the Royal Albert Hall in London, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, and conducted by arranger and composer Anne Dudley. They were joined on stage by album producer Trevor Horn.

In May this year, lead singer Fry revisited the classic album, releasing The Lexicon Of Love II, which made the top ten and giving the band their first top 10 album in 26 years.
