Darren Ferguson missed Doncaster Rovers' final game of the season due to family reasons.

Ferguson informed the club early on Saturday morning that he would not be present for the clash with Wigan Athletic due to a severe family issue.

It later emerged that his father, Sir Alex Ferguson, had undergone emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

Ferguson’s family have requested privacy as the former Manchester United boss recovers in Salford Royal Hospital.

A United statement said the procedure “had gone very well” but Ferguson “needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery”.

Assistant boss Gavin Strachan took charge of Rovers for their final fixture of the season, a 1-0 home defeat to Wigan Athletic.
