'˜Dangerous' man who attacked his partner with a baseball bat given a 12 year sentence

A '˜dangerous offender' who subjected his partner to a '˜sustained and vicious' assault after he had been drinking is beginning a 12 year sentence.

Luke Artis, aged 25, has been sentenced to eight years in custody and ordered to serve a further four on licence at Grimsby Crown Court for a brutal attack on his partner.

Artis met his victim in 2015 while he was a serving prisoner at HMP Lindholme and she was a prison officer.

They began a relationship and she resigned from her job. He was released in July 2017 and by early 2018 was living almost permanently with the victim and her children.

On July 7, the couple went to their local pub in the village of Haxey, North Lincolnshire.  Artis began drinking heavily and was locked out of the pub after waving a knife around.

Passers-by later reported to the police that they had seen Artis repeatedly attacking his partner, who has not been named, with an aluminium baseball bat, causing her multiple facial fractures as well as cuts and bruises.

Jeremy Evans from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: 'This was a sustained and vicious assault on an entirely defenceless woman which left her seriously injured.

'During the police investigation, the victim disclosed other incidents of domestic violence she had suffered at the hands of Luke Artis.

'Furthermore, his attack on her bore a striking resemblances to the offence for which he was imprisoned when the two first met. That offence also involved a brutal attack on his partner using a baseball bat as a weapon.

'This man is clearly a dangerous offender and a threat to any woman with whom he forms a relationship.  I hope the sentenced passed today is of some comfort to his victim.'
