Council Tax managers at Barnsley are warning borough residents to be on their guard against a scam which promises a cash refund.
One resident contacted the council to report a received mobile phone text which promised a Council Tax refund, for supposed overpayment, via a weblink which in turn requested bank details be inputted.
This is a so-called phishing attack and anyone who receives such a message via mobile phone text, or by email, should never comply by inputting their bank details.
Barnsley residents who wish to check their Council Tax account should contact 01226 787787. Residents and businesses in Barnsley can see all their benefits, council tax and business rates online by signing up for a My Bentax account.
