John Fraser was being taken to the segregation unit on April 1, after staff heard he had been threatening to "cut someone up in the yard," said prosecutor Ian West.

He told the custodial operations manager: “The minute I get released I am going to put a piece of plastic between your eyes.”

But Fraser handed over the knife, which had been adapted from a piece of metal and had a 13 centimeter blade, saying: “I might as well give you this before I start shanking officers up.”

He later told police he had the blade to “get (the manager) and for my own protection.”

Sheffield Crown Court heard on Wednesday how Fraser was jailed for two years in 2013 for two robberies, and for six years, in 2013, for false imprisonment and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was near the end of that sentence when he assaulted a prison officer by throwing scalding hot water on his neck in 2019, Mr West added.

In May this year he was sentenced to 28 months for his role in the wounding of an inmate in the prison laundry, which left the victim with a ruptured spleen and facial injuries.

Makham Singh, mitigating, said: "The defendant deeply regrets this and makes no excuses. The lockdown would have affected his mental health.

"He wasn't thinking properly. He volunteered the article and said: "You might as well take this as well."

“He was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bi-polar conditions as a teenager.”

Fraser, 26, currently of HMP Moorlands, pleaded guilty to the unauthorised possession of a weapon in prison, at Doncaster magistrates' court, on July 28.

Recorder Jo Kidd told him: "You were intent on using the weapon against a prison officer. You have persistently engaged in threatening and violent behaviour.”

She sentenced him to 18 months in prison which will be added to the sentence imposed in May.

As Fraser left the video-link room he made a “gang-sign” and said: “Are we done yet?”
