Axe-wielding masked raiders have robbed a town centre jewellery shop, escaping with a quantity of watches.
The robbery is believed to have taken place just before 11.25am this morning, when three masked men entered the premises of Bell Brothers and HL Browns jewellery shop in St Sepulchre Gate.
It is alleged that the men threatened staff with weapons that are believed to include a hammer and an axe, before fleeing with a quantity of watches.
It is believed that while fleeing, the men caused damage to a police vehicle.
The men left the scene in a vehicle, which appears to have crashed on Hall Gate.
It was then abandoned by the men, who fled the scene on foot, and has since been recovered nearby by officers.
Detective Sergeant Andy Knowles said: “This robbery was committed in broad daylight in a busy part of the town centre. The staff at the store have been left shaken, but thankfully uninjured, by this incident and we need to find the persons responsible. We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the town centre this lunchtime and may have seen something, please give us a call and tell us what you know.”
The three men were reportedly wearing dark clothing and balaclavas.
Sky sales advisor, Mitch Smith, works at a stall on the High Street, and was working when the suspected armed robbers made their escape. The 21-year-old said: “We heard the driver of the car beeping his horn.
“He beeped two or three times, and then three or four men ran out and got into the car.
“The car sped off, past Barclays and up the High Street.”
