The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC set a provisional trial date for November 30 and remanded Papworth in custody.

There will be a further hearing on August 28.

"I appreciate that you must feel vulnerable within the prison at the moment," the judge told Papworth.

"There are limited opportunities to see your lawyers. Please be patient with them. You should repose confidence in them."

He said it was difficult to conduct a jury trial when social distancing is required.

"None of us know how long that is going to take," he said.

"We are hoping to hold jury trials on June 29 - but not for cases of this seriousness.

"We hope to have your trial before the end of the year but I cannot promise that for very obvious reasons relating to the Covid 19 pandemic.

"I will get your case on as soon as I possibly can."

He said the November 30 date would probably have to be modified.
