Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard on March 19 how Shane Edwards, aged 43, of Shakespeare Road, Rotherham, broke the panel at Mexborough after the Sheffield to Doncaster service had developed a fault and had to stop.

Robert Coyne, prosecuting, said the train developed a fault and had to stop and while trying to fix this staff were alerted to the sound of breaking glass.

A witness said Edwards was drinking from a can of cider, according to Mr Coyne, and another saw blood coming from his hand.

Mr Coyne said the train was repaired and went to Mexborough station where the defendant and his partner got off.

Samples of blood were taken from the train, according to Mr Coyne, after it went to Doncaster and they were linked to Edwards.

The defendant told police he intended to smash the panel and accepted it was not an emergency but when the train stopped he panicked because he had to get his partner to an appointment.

Edwards pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage after the incident on November 4.

Mark Bates, defending, said Edwards has mental health issues and he panicked when the train stopped and punched the panel and cut his hand.

Magistrates fined Edwards £80 and ordered him to pay £105 compensation, £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
