Police seized three devices belonging to Jie Huang from addresses on Kilnhurst Road and Chaucer Road, in Rotherham, on August 7, said prosecutor Ian Goldsack.

When challenged by officers, he said: "It's something from a long time ago when I was in Mexborough. I looked it up. It was a virus."

Analysis of his computers revealed 177 Category A images, 20 Category B images, and 42 Category C images, where Category A is the most extreme.

Software designed to hide the user's search history was also found, but Huang accepted he had been accessing images of children via the dark web, and storing some of the content on a data stick.

He later accepted sole responsibility for what the police discovered, Mr Goldsack told the court, on Thursday.

Stuart Baird, mitigating, said Huang, who has no previous convictions, was very frank with the probation service.

Huang, 26, of Chaucer Road, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images of children.

Judge Roger Thomas QC said: "This young man accessed this material with some gusto and he took steps to hide away what he was doing.”

He told Huang: "You have a real interest in accessing the internet. There are an awful lot of things that are very bad and absolutely awful.

“If one read out a description of this stuff - never mind looking at the images - people would be appalled.

“You were looking at really young children who were having really awful things done to them.

“Yours is a fairly bad case and you were trying to clean your tracks.

“Members of the public should understand they run the real prospect of going to prison. The probation service thinks you can be weaned away from this stuff.”

He imposed a two year community order with up to 40 sessions of the sex offender treatment programme and 30 days of rehabilitation. He also ordered £510 prosecution costs and put Huang on the Sex Offenders Register for five years and imposed a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
