A South Yorkshire man accused of murder and 10 rapes has appeared in court.

John Heald, of Foljambe Road, Rotherham, appeared at Hull Crown Court yesterday.

The 53-year-old is accused of murdering Bridlington bed and breakfast landlady Bei Carter, who was stabbed to death in an attack at the Morayland Guest House she ran on Friday, July 18.

Heald is also accused of 10 rapes alleged to have been committed in Sheffield five days earlier.

He was arrested by South Yorkshire Police officers at Parkgate retail park, Rotherham, on Friday, July 25.

A trial date of January 27 has been suggested by the court.

If it goes ahead the hearing is expected to last 10 days.

Heald was remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing in October.
