A 13-year-old girl has reported a serious sexual assault in a South Yorkshire underpass.
Police have launched an investigation after the report of the attack in the Alhambra underpass in Barnsley Town Centre at around 8.30pm yesterday, Sunday 7 June.
The girl was walking along the Old Doncaster Road underpass near to Alhambra roundabout, in the direction of Burleigh Court, when it is thought a man followed her into the tunnel where the assault took place.
The suspect is described as having a foreign accent, brown skin, around 30-years-old, 5ft 5ins, of slim build, wearing a black Adidas tracksuit with red stripes and blue gloves.
He has dark blonde hair, a short-cut greyish/black beard, sideburns and a goatee from his under lip down to his chin. The offender also is described as having a large nose.
Following the assault, it is believed that the offender fled towards Sheffield Road or Old Doncaster Road. Officers have cordoned off the whole of the Alhambra underpass and are currently carrying out a detailed investigation at the scene.
Detectives are also reviewing CCTV and increased patrols are being carried out in the area to provide reassurance to the community.
Investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton said: “This is an extremely serious assault.
“We are doing everything we can to catch the offender and the victim has been supported by specially-trained officers following her ordeal.
“We would like to reassure the public that a number of lines of enquiry are being followed up by a dedicated team, and I urge anyone with any information that may lead to the identification of the offender to please get in touch.”
