Serial Doncaster shop thief jailed after stealing energy drinks

A serial Doncaster shop thief has been jailed for stealing energy drinks and entering a supermarket he was banned from, less than three weeks after he was given a community order for a shoplifting spree.

Gareth Luke George Harris appeared before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on November 16 where he admitted the theft, as well as breaching the terms of his bail conditions by entering a Tesco premises.

Records show that Harris, 36, of Crook Street, Bentley, Doncaster, entered the Tesco store on October 6 and stole six cans of Red Bull.

In a separate listing, Harris also admitted entering confectionery from Heron Foods, valued at £28, on November 12.

On November 13, Harris stole three bunches of flowers from a Tesco Express, valued at £25, and returned the following day and stole more flowers to the same value, records show.

On September 17, Harris had appeared before the court where he was given a community order by magistrates for nine previous shop thefts and admitted nine counts of committing an offence while under the supervision of the Probation Service.

On August 13 he had stolen items from B&M Bargains, and also attempted to steal from Heron Foods on July 8.

He had previously tried to steal from Heron Foods on June 22, and stole from Tesco on May 18, records show.

He again stole from Tesco on May 19 and June 15, stole from a Spar store on April 10 and Heron Foods again on March 15 and December 31 last year.

Magistrates’ jailed Harris for a total of 18 weeks and ordered him to pay a total of £70 in compensation to Tesco for the various thefts, and £28 to Heron Foods when he is released from prison.

He was jailed because of his “wilful and persistent failure to comply with the requirements of a community order because the offences were aggravated because they were committed while on bail”.

No prosecution costs or victim surcharge were ordered to be paid by magistrates when Harris appeared before the court.

Harris will serve half of his sentence in prison and the rest in the community.
