Donna Burton, 33, was jailed today (Thursday, November 19) for theft and robbery after stealing from two ‘vulnerable’ people in the town earlier this year and using their bank cards to withdraw funds.

The 33-year-old, of Clarence Avenue, targeted her first victim in May, after the 47-year-old who lives in supported housing, noticed a bank card had been taken from her property and over £1,000 was missing from her account.

Burton was confronted by the victim, who admitted that she had stolen the card and cash but promised she would pay the amount back.

A 66-year-old man also reported that Burton had forced her way into his home and taken his wallet on May 31.

The man’s card was later used to withdraw £300 from different local ATMs.

In both cases, officers were able to identify the 33-year-old on CCTV footage using the two cards in nine different locations across the town between May 18 and May 30.

Burton was arrested on June 2 and charged to court the following day.

She previously admitted nine counts of fraud and one count of theft and was convicted of robbery at Sheffield Crown Court today, where she was handed a prison sentence of four years and two months.

DC Alicia Yorke said: “The two victims of these offences are vulnerable members of our community and Donna Burton preyed on that vulnerability.

“They have both been brave enough to come forward to the police and have been invaluable in helping us secure a conviction.”
