A number recently planted trees have been destroyed on Town Field in recent weeks, with the most recent this week.

Chairman of Friends of Town Field, Alastair Lang, said: “There’s been another tree destroyed – initially on Monday night, and then they came back to cause more damage to it.

"We reported it to the council immediately.

"This is the seventh tree that’s been destroyed, and they cost over £100 each, plus the support posts and the cost of someone planting them. The council told us they couldn’t replace them until winter. We’ve offered to put protection barriers round them if the council provides the material. We had done that on several, but ran out of material.

"We’re really disappointed that there is so much vandalism against these trees.”

He said some had suggested that the damage may have been done a dog whose owner was trying to teach it to be agressive, but had no confirmation of this.

Mr Lang said there had also been vandalism against benches, in the form of grafitti being written on them, although he added that council workmen had been quick to come to the park to remove it.

Doncaster Council said in a statement: “We’re sad to say that unbelievably it’s happened again - this mindless violence was reported to us over the weekend.

“Please always report this kind of environmental crime, especially if you see any suspicious behaviour.”
