THREE people died following contact with South Yorkshire Police in the last year.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission figures for 2010/11 reveal one person died after being hit by a police car in Sheffield, a man was found dead in a canal in Attercliffe after a police pursuit, and a third man died after being arrested by the police in Doncaster.

Nationally the ‘deaths during or following police contact’ reveal 147 deaths following contact with police.

The number of people who died in road traffic incidents was 26, two were shot, 21 died in or following police custody, 46 committed suicide after their release from custody, and 52 died following police contact.

The IPCC is investigating the three South Yorkshire deaths.

PC Rodney Mills, aged 41, has been charged with causing death by careless driving after his patrol car struck and killed 19-year-old Sheffield student Jamie Haslett.

Jamiet, who was originally from the Isle of Man, was studying at Sheffield Hallam University and died after being knocked down on Broad Lane last October.

The man found dead in a canal was Wayne Hamilton, 24, of Albert Road, Heeley. He was reported missing by his family when a friend rang a relative to say the last time he had seen Wayne he was running off with police chasing him in Attercliffe.

His body was pulled from the canal in Attercliffe a few days later.

The third case relates to Kevin Taylor, who died in Doncaster in June last year after being arrested.

Police were called to a disturbance at a house in the Dunscroft and arrested the 62-year-old to prevent a breach of the peace.

But while being transported to custody Mr Taylor fell unconscious and officers took him directly to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where he died a short time later.

IPCC interim chairman Len Jackson said forces nationwide need to remain vigilant.

“Friends and families of those who have died will find little solace in the fact their tragedy is one of what has been a decreasing number,” he said.
