Sheffield Crown Court heard on January 19 how Daryl Williams, aged 28, of no fixed abode, was caught trying to pass 52.4 grammes of the class B controlled drug to an inmate he was visiting at HMP Doncaster.

Brian Outhwaite, prosecuting, said Williams was seen by a prison officer who was with a search dog which showed an interest in Williams.

CCTV also captured Williams putting a hand down his trousers, according to Mr Outhwaite, and taking out a package and transferring it to an inmate who put it in his waistband.

The defendant initially denied the offence and claimed he had passed a food item to the inmate and he had not seen the package before.

However Williams, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to conveying a prohibited item into HMP Doncaster in March, 2019.

Andrew Petterson, defending, said Williams has no convictions for drug trafficking and he has never received a custodial sentence before and his last previous offence dates back to 2017.

Judge Rachael Harrison told Williams: “Taking drugs into prison undermines the good order of the prison.”

She added that taking drugs into prisons leads to bullying, debt problems and violence and it is a much more serious offence than dealing drugs outside of prisons.

Judge Harrison sentenced Williams to six months of custody.
