Firefighters from three stations dealt with a string of deliberate fires across Wath last night.

At around 2am, an MG car was set alight at Winfield Road in the town, and was followed by a caravan blaze at 3.10am that spread to a nearby property on Stump Cross Road. Firefighters spent almost two hours making the area safe.

At 3.20am a Vauxhall Combo van was torched on a driveway at Park Road, and at Matthews Avenue at 3.30am a fire in a wheelie bin sparked the flare-up of a nearby parked vehicle. Another wheelie bin fire was extinguished on Sandygate.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “Luckily no one was injured in any of the incidents, but these mindless acts put life at risk and take up valuable fire and police resources.”

Crews from Dearne, Rotherham and Barnsley stations were deployed to the fires.
