Mum and partner to be sentenced TODAY over murder of tragic Doncaster two-year-old

Keigan O’Brien, aged two, died of catastrophic head injuries in January and X-rays revealed he had suffered a number of fractures in the months and weeks leading up to his death.

The younger’s head injury was said to have been so severe it was akin to those suffered by the victims of fatal car crashes.

Keigan’s mum, Sarah O'Brien, 33 and her partner, Martin Currie, 36, were both accused of murder, with Currie found guilty yesterday after a trial.

He was also found guilty of child neglect.

O’Brien was acquitted of murder but found guilty of allowing or permitting the death of a child and child neglect.

Jurors were told that Currie and O’Brien had been in a new relationship and he had moved into her family home.

They were said to have shown no remorse for the death of Keigan and jurors were told that in text messages to each other before his death they had used derogatory terms to refer to the youngster.

Detective Chief Inspector James Axe said the pair formulated a ‘series of lies’ in a bid to conceal the truth around what happened to Keigan.

Speaking after yesterday’s verdicts were delivered, he said: “The only two people responsible for Keigan’s death are O’Brien and Currie, two people who should have loved and cared for him. In fact they should have been the very people, who protected little Keigan above all else.”
