Mexborough man Gary Cooper, 28, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for three offences he committed in just over two hours.

Cooper, of Dodworth Street, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday to be sentenced for assault, burglary and possession of an imitation firearm.

On December 11, at around 1.35pm, Cooper stole a woman’s mobile phone from Teddy’s Amusements on High Street in Mexborough.

He then went on to assault a 49-year-old man, who was sat in his van in a car park, with the imitation firearm at around 3.55pm.

Police were called and arrested Cooper at his home address later that afternoon.

Cooper pleaded guilty to all three offences and was handed a 12 month sentence for the burglary and an 18 month sentence for the assault to run consecutively.

He was given a six month sentence for possession of an imitation firearm to run concurrently.

PC Lisa Kelly investigating said: “Officers swiftly detained Cooper and we built a strong case against him to secure this prosecution.

“Fortunately the male victim did not sustain serious injuries, however he was left extremely shaken by the assault, an action which Cooper gave no consideration to.

“We will always thoroughly investigate any crime reported to us and endeavour to bring offenders before the courts.”
