A man accused of killing a well known football fan in an attack in a Barnsley bar has been remanded in custody today.

Jason Derbyshire, aged 32, of Welland Court in Higham, Barnsley, appeared before Barnsley magistrates yesterday charged with the manslaughter of 46-year-old dad-of-three Nicholas Bedford.

His case has been transferred to Sheffield Crown Court, where he is due to appear on December 2.

Mr Bedford, known as Beddy, was a Barnsley FC fan and chairman of grassroots football club North Gawber Colliery FC.

He was found unconscious in the Blue Room bar in Wellington Street, Barnsley town centre, in the early hours of Monday, November 2, after an attack.

South Yorkshire Police detectives are working their way through a list of potential witnesses to the attack and are urging those who have not yet come forward to make contact with the force.

Friends of Mr Bedford have donated over £1,000 through an online site to help his family pay for his funeral costs.

He is survived by his wife Celia and children Amy-Rose, Jake and Holly.

Call police on 101.
