Two Doncaster residents had a lucky escape after they disturbed would-be burglars.

One culprit forced the garage door of a home at Dunniwood Reach, Bessacarr, between 1am and 4am yesterday and found the house keys inside the car.

They then entered the home, but fled when the occupant woke and came to the top of the stairway.

In a separate incident at 5.20pm yesterday, a sneak-in burglar entered a home at Radburn Road, Rossington, through an insecure front door. But they ran off when an occupant saw them in the hallway.

Said Superintendent Eddie Murphy, of South Yorkshire Police: “Thankfully nothing was taken in either of these cases, but it could easily have been a different story.

“It’s dark by late afternoon and people are often watching telly or eating tea at that time. Opportunist offenders will take advantage of open doors.

“People should also keep keys – either house or vehicle – in a safe place, out of sight.”
