Girl, 5, in hospital with ‘serious injuries’ after horror South Yorkshire Police car chase crash

A girl, aged five, is in hospital after being seriously injured in a South Yorkshire Police car chase.

The youngster was injured when a blue Citroen C3 being pursued by the police, was involved in a head-on collision with a white Range Rover Evoque on Fish Dam Lane, near Royston, Barnsley.

The girl was in the rear of the Evoque and a man and woman, both 32, were in the front.

The adults escaped with minor injuries but the young girl was seriously hurt and taken to hospital, where she remains.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

South Yorkshire Police said: “At 12.35pm, it is reported that an officer in a marked police car in the Athersley North area of Barnsley spotted a vehicle with a smashed windscreen.

“The vehicle, a blue Citroen C3, is believed to have become aware of the police presence and drove off, with the police vehicle following.

“On Fish Dam Lane, as the Citroen was travelling in the general direction of Royston, it was involved in a collision with a white Range Rover Evoque travelling the opposite way. The collision happened close to the junction with Shaw Lane.

“The driver of the Citroen, a 29-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“The Citroen was later identified as having been stolen in a burglary in Barnsley.”

Police want to hear from witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage.
