South Yorkshire Police said police were deployed to Doncaster’s St George’s Bridge after they were alerted to the presence of a 14-year-old girl on the bridge.

A spokeswoman said: “It was a young female, 14 years old...she wasn’t well.”

Eyewitnesses said three emergency vehicles including an ambulance were seen near Doncaster College where the bridge crosses the canal.

The teenager has since been brought to safety.
