Sheffield Crown Court heard on November 23 how Shakeel Mahmood, of Wolsey Avenue, at Intake, Doncaster, had been visiting a flat with others when he set three dogs on the tenant and pulled out an axe before causing £440 of damage to the property.

Amy Earnshaw, prosecuting, said the tenant had been letting people stay and others had visited his home with Mahmood on May 15 to collect belongings when the defendant set the dogs on him, pulled out an axe and damaged the windows.

Mahmood, who said he was aged 21, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage and to possessing an offensive weapon in public, namely the baton. He also admitted breaching a previously imposed suspended prison sentence. No action was taken in relation to the axe.

Cheryl Dudley, defending, said Mahmood, who has previous convictions, has mental health issues and his cannabis use has made it difficult for others to assist him but he is becoming more settled.

Recorder Michael Fanning sentenced Mahmood to a community order with a 16-week curfew running daily from 7pm to 7am, and he chose not to activate the suspended sentence but fined Mahmood £100 and ordered him to pay a £95 victim surcharge.
