Doncaster police and councillors urge 'don't turn a blind eye to domestic abuse'

Council bosses and police chiefs are urging Doncaster residents not to turn a blind eye to someone they think is being domestically abused during lockdown.

The comments come as reports show a national rise in domestic violence cases due to the lockdown restrictions.

It also comes as a man was arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman who was stabbed to death in Barnsley last month.

National domestic violence helpline Refuge, which helps at-risk women and children, said it had experienced a 25 per cent in calls since the lockdown was imposed.

Residents are being urged to be a ‘good neighbour’ and look out for those who may be at risk.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence are being urged to call 999 and for those who cannot speak to an operator to also dial 5-5 once the call is connected. Officers will be dispatched to the scene.

Coun Chris McGuinness, Doncaster Council cabinet member for communities, voluntary sector and the environment, said: “It is really important to stay home at this time to limit the spread of Coronavirus. This protects the NHS and will save lives, but staying home may be a terrifying prospect if you are living with an abusive partner or being harassed by an ex-partner.

“If you overhear someone being harmed or have concerns about their safety please be a good neighbour and let us know about it, you could make a difference, you could save a life. Our staff are here and they can help.”

Chief superintendent Shaun Morley, South Yorkshire Police’s district commander for Doncaster, said: “There are a range of agencies working together in Doncaster to keep you safe and if you do have concerns about domestic abuse, there are a number of ways you can contact someone to seek advice or help.

“You are not alone and we are here for you.”
