Sheffield Crown Court heard on July 1 how Paul White, aged 49, of Edgbaston Way, Edlington, Doncaster, admitted using controlling and coercive behaviour during the relationship with his wife as well as stalking her after they had separated.

Gurdial Singh, prosecuting, said White bombarded his wife with calls and texts demanding to know where she was, who she was with and what she was doing and he objected to her going to a squash club and would only let her go to the gym for an hour.

The complainant said White budgeted her spending and insulted her and she had to make up excuses to others for not going out.

White became angry when a widowed auntie declined to come with them over a festive season, according to Mr Singh, and he became angry with his wife’s daughter who had been drinking champagne.

Mr Singh said White demanded to lock the doors while she had been visiting a friend who had lost a partner and on another occasion he shouted at her after she had gone to the squash club with her daughter.

After the couple separated, White texted his wife while she was on holiday with her new partner, according to Mr Singh, and she realised White had been monitoring her by the tracker on her daughter’s phone.

Mr Singh said the defendant bombarded her with texts about her new relationship and threatened to kill himself and when she blocked him he started sending emails and flowers.

White claimed to police his wife had had an affair and he had started drinking and sending messages.

He pleaded guilty to using controlling and coercive behaviour and to stalking.

Becky Jane, defending, said White is a hard-working man with no previous convictions and those providing references have been shocked he has committed these offences.

She added White is remorseful and is seeking help to address his behaviour.

Judge Michael Slater sentenced White to 12-months of custody suspended for two years with a rehabilitation requirement and a five-year restraining order.
