Detectives investigating a shooting in which a man died and a woman was critically injured are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Nottinghamshire Police believe the dead man shot the woman before turning the gun on himself.

Officers were called to Galway Road, Bircotes, near Doncaster, in the early hours of Friday to find a man - named by neighbours as 37-year-old Paul White - dead. His long-term partner, Shani Cockrell, 33, was seriously injured.

The couple’s two children, little boys aged two and four, were also in the home at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.

Detective Chief Inspector Mel Bowden said: “We are satisfied the injured female was a victim in this incident. Until a post mortem examination is carried out we will not be in a position to formally identify the deceased, but we believe he was the offender in this case and will not be looking for any further suspects.”

Miss Cockrell, who worked as a mobile hairdresser, remained in hospital yesterday, where her condition was described as serious but stable.

Her parents Gerald and Julia, who live opposite, were at her bedside.

Friends and neighbours have spoken of their shock.

One neighbour said Mr White and Miss Cockrell were ‘childhood sweethearts’ who seemed ‘perfectly happy’ as they walked home from a local pub together after a family Boxing Day celebration before the shooting.

Friend Tiffany Carmichael said: “Shani and Paul were childhood sweethearts since school and had been together all their adult lives.

“They’re not known as a couple who row a lot.”

A neighbour said: “I can’t believe this has happened to a terrific family.”

Local residents said they heard shouting coming from the couple’s terraced home on the night of the shooting.

One neighbour said: “This is going to devastate the whole community. The people are very close here. When you need people they are there for you.”
