Officers saw the fog lights on Ryan Margison’s grey Seat Leon were on when they weren't necessary, in Doncaster, at 3.30am, on December 11, 2019, said prosecutor Catherine White.

Ignoring their lights and sirens, he accelerated to speeds of 85mph in residential areas, ran red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road.

Even when some of his tyres were deflated by a stop-stick, on Edlington Lane, Margison continued his escape bid.

When he was finally boxed in by two police vehicles and forced to a stop, he told officers: "My mum is going to kill me."

Cocaine was found in his pocket and a test revealed he had 71 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 mls of breath, when the legal limit is 35 mcgs.

One of the pursuing officers said: "Had other vehicles emerged into the Seat's path a collision would have been inevitable."

Margison later told police he drank more than he intended at a Christmas party and decided to drive the short distance to where he was staying for work the next day.

He said the cocaine was for personal consumption.

James Baird, mitigating, said: "This was a complete moment of madness. It was very much out of character. He has shown real and genuine remorse. He feels he has let his family down.

“He realised he had to get to work and foolishly, quite madly, decided to take the risk. He panicked and tried to get away. He hasn't driven a car since this incident.

"If he were sent to prison it would effectively destroy everything he has built up. He is unlikely to be back before these courts again."

Margison, 21, of Broadway, Dunscroft, Doncaster, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol, and possession of cocaine, on December 17, 2020.

On Wednesday, Recorder Felicity Davies told him: "This is an absolutely dreadful offence of dangerous driving.”

She sentenced him to 12 months, suspended for two years. He was banned for three years, fined £600 and told to pay £400 costs. He must also carry out 280 hours of unpaid work.
