Candlelight vigil and balloon release held for tragic Doncaster toddler Keigan O'Brien

Grieving neighbours and friends gathered last night in memory of tragic Doncaster toddler Keigan O’Brien.

The two-year-old died in hospital from head injuries on Thursday, January 9, after being found seriously injured at a home on Bosworth Road, Adwick.

Martin Currie, 36, and Sarah O’Brien, 32, both of Bosworth Road, have been charged with his murder. The pair appeared at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Saturday, January 11, and were both remanded into custody ahead of an appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.

Dozens of people gathered on Bosworth Road yesterday evening to pay their respects to Keigan, who is understood to have died a few days after his second birthday.

They lit candles, left flowers and released blue balloons into the sky.

Among the sea of floral tributes are a number of teddy bears and a Minions cuddly toy.

Emergency services were called to the house on Wednesday, January 8, and Keigan was taken to hospital, where he died the following day.

South Yorkshire Police said yesterday that specialist officers were continue to support the youngster’s family.

Detective Chief Inspector James Axe, the senior investigating officer, also urged people to be mindful of what they are posting on social media.

“It’s really important to refrain from posting any speculative comments and details about the case to avoid further distress to Keigan’s family and allow them the privacy to grieve, but to also allow the criminal proceedings to progress through the courts unhindered,” he said.
