Police today arrested a man in connection with an alleged ‘bogus’ sponsorship collection for a bereaved family.
It follows reports of someone visiting homes in the Askern area of Doncaster claiming that his brother was taking part in a sponsored bungee jump at a pub in Edenthorpe. The event was allegedly being held to raise money to repair a child’s gravestone.
The landlord of the pub contacted police after getting calls from people asking about the jump which he had no knowledge of taking place.
A 39-year-old man was arrested this morning on suspicion of fraud and has been bailed pending further enquiries.
Anyone with information about the suspected fake sponsorship collection is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting crime reference number A/5349/14.
