A teenage girl and a man arrested over the murder of a South Yorkshire grandmother were still in police custody last night.

Officers arrested the 17-year-old girl and 23-year-old man following the discovery of the body of a woman, in her 70s, in a house on Birkwood Avenue, Cudworth, Barnsley, on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman, named by neighbours as grandmother Doreen Walker, is believed not to have been seen for a number of days when concerned relatives and neighbours discovered her body.

Yesterday forensic experts remained at her semi-detached home, which was sealed off and under police guard.

Officers also continued to carry out door-to-door inquiries in the area in the hope of finding people who may have seen or heard anything suspicious.

Floral tributes have been left outside as a mark of respect.

A post mortem examination is to be carried out to help determine her cause of death.

Mrs Walker has been described by friends and neighbours as ‘a lovely lady’ and ‘salt of the earth’.
