Arsonists hunted over spate of fires in South Yorkshire

Arsonists are being hunted by South Yorkshire Police over a spate of blazes over the weekend.

In Barnsley, firefighters dealt with cars set alight on Pontefract Road, Cundy Cross; Chapel Lane, Carlton and Doveside Drive, Darfield, in the early hours of Saturday.

Later that morning a motorbike was torched in Bowden Housestead Woods, Darnall, Sheffield and a car was set alight on East Avenue, Woodlands, Doncaster, that night.

Firefighters also dealt with a car set on fire on The Lings, Armthorpe, Doncaster, on Saturday night and a bin chute set alight on Gleadless Road, Gleadless Valley, Sheffield.

At 10pm on Sunday a Volkswagen Passatt was set alight on Aintree Avenue, Cantley, Doncaster.

Firefighters also dealt with a number of blazes started accidentally over the weekend, including a house fire on Lowfield Road, Wheatley Hills, Doncaster, after a halogen lamp was left too close to a pair of curtains.

A discarded cigarette caused a fire in the basement of the Prince of Wales pub on Station Road, Mosborough, Sheffield.
