The character, who has resurfaced in Doncaster after a three year absence, has left hundreds of residents terrified with posts and photographs on its Facebook page of "attacks" on various local villages.

After visiting Stainforth last night, the clown posted: "Walked the full length of East Lane last night and not a soul in sight. Everyone must have all been hiding in Stainforth.

"I just want to give some hugs out, can anyone recommend a village in Donny where people won't hide from me?"

Since the Doncaster Clown Facebook page was established on Friday, its has now clocked up more than 3,000 likes and is continuing to grow.

A group to report clown sightings has also been set up while scores of people have thrown down challenges for the clown to visit their village. The Spot the Clown Doncaster group has attracted nearly 200 people.

However, other Facebook users have threatened the clown with violence and attacks if it comes to their village.

And others have claimed the clown is a fake, with photos of sightings stolen from the web.

One anonymous user said: "The images are being taken from Google."

He added that a sighting, reported by a Lewis Grimes in Rossington was fake and said: "Lewis Grimes claims to have seen the clown last night in Rossington, but hasn't made any reference to seeing the clown on his own Facebook, and is just posting to add fear."

The clown was reputedly stalking the streets of Rossington on Friday before heading to Stainforth last night.

The character, who reportedly brought fear to streets of the town three years ago despite no confirmed sightings, began a new wave of fear on Friday with the chilling message: "I'm coming back. Keep your eyes open..."

There were reported "sightings"on social media of the spooky clown haunting the streets of Doncaster in 2013 and police were moved to reassure the public after scores of reports of residents donning clown costumes and stalking the streets to terrify residents.

However police quashed the reports and told parents to reassure their children.

In a spate of incidents throughout 2013, clowns had supposedly been sighted on the streets of Grimsby, Lincoln, Retford, Scunthorpe, Mansfield, Bradford, Sheffield and Hull with the incidents seemingly stemming from a series of incidents in Northampton from earlier in the year when photographs of a man dressed as Pennywise the Clown from 1980s horror film Stephen King’s It began circulating.

The Free Press has contacted the Doncaster Clown for a comment but there has been no response.
