Council raises awareness of mental health in the Isle

North Lincolnshire Council is taking part in Mental Health Awareness Week (May 11-17) and is raising awareness of mental health; this year’s theme focuses on mindfulness.

Mindfulness is mind-body based training that helps people to change the way they think and feel about their experiences, particularly stressful ones. Mindfulness is recommended as a treatment for people with mental ill-health as well as those who want to improve their mental health and wellbeing.*

Mindfulness exercises are ways of paying attention to the present moment, using techniques like meditation, breathing and yoga. Training helps people to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings and body sensations so that instead of being overwhelmed by them, they’re better able to manage them. Practising mindfulness can give more insight into emotions, boost attention and concentration, and improve relationships.*

In the afternoon on Wednesday May 13 from 1.30pm to 5pm at Heslam Park there will be a programme of events delivered by a range of organisations.

It is free to attend and everyone who takes part in the training course in the morning is welcome to stay

There will be short talks throughout the afternoon given by RDaSH, Youplus, Wright Mind Training Services and other local mental health providers. Information will be provided on RDaSH’s Recovery College and on this year’s theme of mindfulness.

Sally Wilford, Health Improvement and Wellbeing Officer at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Mental health is an extremely important issue that isn’t talked about enough. It is quite often a subject that people avoid. Therefore we want to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing and encourage people to talk about it. The training sessions will help people understand mental health issues and how to deal with them, as well as how to look after their own mental health. The afternoon session will allow people to learn more about mindfulness, the theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week.”
